Who must declare personal property?

RSMo. 137.075 Every person owning or holding real property or tangible personal property on the first day of January, including all such property purchased on that day shall be liable for taxes thereon during the same calendar year. RSMo. 137.340 Every person, corporation, partnership or association owning or controlling tangible personal property shall file with the assessor of the county an itemized return listing all the tangible personal property so owned or controlled on January 1st. Personal property must be reported in the county where you resided on January 1st.

How can I declare personal property?

If you have resided and reported personal property last year in Jefferson County you will be mailed a personal property declaration during the first week of January. You must fill out and return the declaration by March 1st.

What if I am a new resident to Jefferson County?

If you recently moved to Jefferson County you will need to file a Personal Property New Resident Declaration with the personal property department.

To obtain a declaration in person, come to the Department of the County Assessor located in the lower level of the Administration Center, 729 Maple Street, Hillsboro, Missouri. Hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday excluding holidays.

What if I moved but stayed in Jefferson County?

If you were a resident of Jefferson County and changed your location in the County you need to fill out the Personal Property Change of Address Form.

To obtain a change of address form in person, come to the Department of the County Assessor located in the lower level of the Administration Center, 729 Maple Street, Hillsboro, Missouri. Hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday excluding holidays.

What if I have not received a personal property declaration in the mail?

Contact the Department of County Assessor and a form will be mailed to you or you can come into our office and a form will be provided for you.

When should Personal Property Forms be filed?

RSMo. 137.340 The returns shall be delivered to the office of the assessor of the county between the first day of January and the first day of March of each year and shall be signed and certified by the taxpayer as being a true and complete list or statement of all taxable personal property and the estimated true value thereof.

Will I be penalized for not returning a personal property declaration form?

RSMo. 137.280 If any person shall fail to deliver the required list to the assessor by the 1st day of March, the owner of the property which ought to have been listed shall be assessed a penalty added to the tax bill, based on the assessed value of the property that was not reported, as follows:

What if I did not receive my personal property tax bill from Jefferson County?

If you were a resident of Jefferson County on January 1st, and did not receive a tax bill, please contact the Department of County Collector at 636-797-5406.

What is a tax waiver?

A tax waiver indicates a specific person, business or corporation does not owe any personal property taxes for a specified tax year. A tax waiver is only used to license a vehicle or obtain a business license. You may be entitled to a waiver if you are one of the following:

In order to qualify, we must also see your vehicle registration and identification. It may be possible to fax or email your information to our office to have your waiver processed. Please contact our office for complete details.

How to apply for a tax waiver.

Application for a waiver can be made in person, by U.S. mail, by fax or by email. If by fax or email the application should be made at least 24 hours prior to needing the waiver. The waiver application can be printed from this website. After completing the application it may be brought to the office in person, mailed, faxed, or scanned and returned by email, along with the items listed below. If the waiver application is made in person you will be able to leave the building with the waiver in hand. If done by mail, fax or email the waiver may not be available until the following day. Waivers done by mail, fax or email may be faxed to participating license offices upon your request at the license office. Waivers not picked up in person or faxed to the license office will have to be obtained from the Department of the County Collector by calling 636-797-5406.
